"My Smile" was written in early 1996, after New Jacobin Club's founding members (The Horde/guitar+vocals & The Cur/drums) found themselves without a bass player. A friend (listed as "Bloodclot Burke") filled in to complete the "Pacifists are Suckers" demo, which featured three songs: Motive, My Smile, and Spit It Out. A fourth song titled "Dendrite Decay" was also recorded, but not included on the cassette. Of the four songs recorded in early 1996, two of them went on to be re-recorded and performed live numerous times over the next two and a half decades. The band still keeps "Spit It Out" and "My Smile" in their working repertoire to this day, with "Spit It Out" being a post-encore final song, usually with multiple band members sharing the lead vocals. You can watch the band perform "Spit It Out" at the NJC 20th Anniversary Celebration here.
